Davao: Abducted soldier seen with rebels (5:10 p.m.)

THE Army soldier abducted by the New People's Army (NPA) after a firefight in Monkayo, Compostela Valley last Friday was seen alive and in the company of the rebels Sunday.

Private First Class Marjun Gatela was captured by rebels in an encounter with 20 rebels from the Front Committee 2 under Vicente Taoy alias Kumander Benal in August 10 at sitio Kadapang, barangay San Isidro.

Major Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Eastern Mindanao Command, told Sun.Star Davao yesterday that at around 6.a.m., Gatela was sighted in barangay Casoon, Monkayo in the company of 18 rebels from the Front Committee 3 under Ka Jazzy at the vicinity of Sitio Sapdan.

Monkayo Vice Mayor Avelino Cabag is said to be negotiating with the rebels for the safe release of the abducted soldier as of this writing. (BOT of Sunstar Davao)
