S. Mindanao guvs, DOT vow to strengthen tourism By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO CITY -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the four provinces in the Davao Region agreed to strengthen the tourism industry and make the region a primary international destination.
In a forum with the governors of the provinces of Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Compostela Valley Friday, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano vowed support for the tourism projects of the local governments in the region.

He said the Davao Region is now among their top priority areas to develop and promote in the international market.
Durano said they have started this with the holding of the Asean Tourism Forum here in Davao City last year.
"Now we want Davao Region to have more access to the international community thru direct flights," Durano said.
The secretary said all the local chief executives have to do now is "harness their natural resources" so tourists would be enticed to visit their provinces.
In the five-minute presentation of the tourist attractions in their respective provinces, Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario took pride on their hosting of the world-renowned Pearl Farm Resort located at the Island Garden City of Samal.
Claiming his province as the most popular province in the region, del Rosario said he is also planning to make their banana industry as a tourist attraction by conducting educational tours.
For Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon, her province has a lot of natural wonders to offer ranging from pristine beaches to natural parks like the Mt. Hamiguitan Pygmy Forest.
Malanyaon also took pride on the fact that their province is site to the First Millennium Sunrise and home to well known personalities like the Tulfo brothers.
For Compostela Valley, Governor Arturo "Chiongkee" Uy said he is placing top priority on their tourism and investment sectors for the next three years.
He encouraged tourists to come visit his province next year once tourism facilities are improved and completed.
The Provincial Government of Davao del Sur, through the representation of Board Member Didi Cagas, meanwhile said her province does not pale in comparison with the other three provinces in the region when it comes to tourist attractions.
She said with the new administration under her husband, Governor Douglas Cagas, they plan to seize the "most popular province" tag from Davao del Norte in no time at all.
