DAVAO CITY -- A former cop that placed eighth in the national police's most wanted list was killed in a shootout with authorities in Davao City Tuesday morning.

Allan Estrada, a former policeman assigned in the city, was killed at around 10 a.m. in his parents' house on Tangerine St., Dacoville Subdivision, Toril, Davao City.

Estrada went home to attend the wake of his mother when authorities attempted to arrest him. The wanted ex-cop allegedly resisted arrest, resulting in a shootout that cost him his life.

Estrada is wanted for kidnap-for-ransom charges and carries a reward of P825,000 on his head, Police Regional Office 11 Director Andres Caro II said.

Estrada is the only former policeman included in the most wanted list of the police.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he knew of Estrada's presence in Dacoville Monday.

Once a good cop

Duterte congratulated police for a job well done.

The mayor said he was saddened by Estrada's violent death. He said Estrada used to be a good cop.

"I'm sad in a sense that he used to be a peace officer. He was really very good when he was with the service. But things changed along the way kaya it had to end this way. I have said before na hahabulin kita (I will run after you) and I will catch up with you," Duterte said.

Duterte said Estrada is not only wanted in the city but also in the entire country.

"Wanted yan siya (Estrada) for bank robbery, kidnapping, and murder," Duterte said.

Estrada, who used to be a member of the Traffic Management Group but who went AWOL, has been tagged as a member of the Fajardo gang.

The Fajardo group has been tagged as responsible for at least 16 kidnappings in Metro Manila in 2001-2002 alone.

Duterte added that Estrada has been identified as among those who shot dead Malita mayoralty candidate Isidro Sarmiento and his son Danilo Sarmiento last May 15.

Estrada was among the wanted persons found to be with former Davao del Sur congressman Claude Bautista as his close-in security.

Reports gathered by Sun.Star Davao revealed that Estrada went back to Davao City to pay his last respects to his mother who died three days ago. Estrada was reported to have arrived only on Monday.

Resisted arrest

In an interview with San Pedro Police Station deputy director Alden Delvo, he said that at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, they went to the residence of Estrada's parents to serve a long standing warrant of arrest on the ex-cop.

However, Estrada allegedly fired at the police upon seeing them.

"We had no recourse but to shoot him," Delvo said. Estrada was hit by three to four bullets and instantly killed. Delvo said two unidentified persons escaped through a back window and police are now pursuing them.

Members of the Heinous Crime and Investigation Section, Talomo Police Station, City Mobile Group, and Police Station 2 conducted the operation. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
