Oro city police chief steps down

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- City Police Chief Aurelio Trampe will turn over his post to his deputy following a Camp Crame directive transferring him to the Police Regional Office.

Trampe's transfer comes amid persistent calls from City Hall officials and several sectors for his relief or transfer and for Deputy City Police Director Antonio Montalba to replace him.

In a television interview, Trampe thanked local officials for supporting the city police and said his transfer was part of Camp Crame's revamp of police offices in the country.

The Iligan City Police Office was also reportedly revamped by the national police leadership.

"I have served as city police office chief for two years already and there is a new mayor now and he has the prerogative of retaining me or ordering my transfer," Trampe said.

Mayor Constantino Jaraula said Trampe's transfer is a "promotion" of sorts and that with the change in administration, there is an urgent need for a more intensified campaign against criminality.

Despite maintaining a relatively peaceful climate in Cagayan de Oro, detractors heavily criticized Trampe for his "laid back" demeanor and perceived inefficiency in arresting those behind petty crimes and robberies.

The latest tirade against Trampe was the city police's perceived failure to arrest suspects behind the rape and murder of Janet Sazel last Friday. The regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group did the job instead.

Jaraula said the crime incidence in the city is not alarming and the change of leadership may also intensify the campaign against criminality.

Trampe's successor, Montalba, served as acting city police director but never fully assumed the job because his rank was then a senior inspector.

Montalba was replaced by Superintendent Honorio Cervantes who retired early last year. Former mayor Vicente Emano, before his term ended this year, recently pushed for Montalba's reappointment as city police director but the regional police recommended Trampe instead.

Trampe assumed the post of city police director over Emano's protests but the former's appointment was insisted on by then Police Regional Office Director Dante Tejada.

Trampe's reassignment to the regional police office followed a similar transfer to this same office by then City Police Director Felicisimo Khu back in 2002. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
