45 killed in Basilan encounter (7:02 p.m.)

ZAMBOANGA CITY –- Fighting broke out Saturday morning that resulted to the death of 45 people — 15 soldiers and 30 Abu Sayyaf bandits — in the island province of Basilan.

Two of the bandits that were killed were identified as alleged members of the group who beheaded the Marine troopers in the July 10 carnage in Barangay Ginanta in the newly-created town of Al-Barka.

The Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) reported that the clash broke out around 6:41 a.m. in the village of Selangkum in the newly-created town of Ungkaya Pukan. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
