RP agri, fishery sectors to get more funds (9:56 a.m.)
MANILA -- Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya said Malacañang is raising the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act (AFMA) budget by P2.7 billion in 2008 to P23.6 billion from P20.9 billion this year.
Andaya said the bulk of the AFMA or about P20.25 billion would go to Department of Agriculture (DA) followed by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) with P1.7 billion and the budgetary support for local government units (LGUs) with P1.34 billion and government corporations with P310 million.
He said the allocations are on top of the regular appropriations for payroll and other operating expenses of DA, which is P3.5 billion and of DAR which is P2.4 billion. DAR would also get an additional P8.9 billion for the 2008 Agrarian Reform Fund.
Andaya said of the AFMA allocation for DA: P8 billion would go to 25 combined locally-funded and foreign-assisted irrigation projects; P4 billion for food production including palay, corn and high-value crop inputs and livestock support; and P4.2 billion for farm-to-market-road building, repair and maintenance.
