Four drug rings operate in Oro: official
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Four major syndicate groups involved in the illegal drugs trade have been identified to be operating in Cagayan de Oro City, the region's new illegal drugs czar said Monday.

Reports said the syndicates are protected by law enforcers, allowing them to perpetrate their "very profitable" drugs trade in the city.

During the City Council session on Monday, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)-Northern Mindanao Director Glenn dela Torre said four big groups trade illegal drugs in the city.

"We are now monitoring and gathering intelligence reports on the activities of these four syndicate groups," he told the councilors Monday.

Aside from saying they have already "identified" the groups, dela Torre said he could not reveal other details "for reasons of security."

De la Torre, concurrent regional director for PDEA in the Caraga Region, was invited by the City Council Monday to shed light on the proliferation of illegal drugs in local public schools in the city.

He was installed as the region's illegal drugs czar just two weeks ago.

Cleansing process

City Councilor Alden Bacal asked Dela Torre if he could still be effective since he is serving as regional director of PDEAs in two regions.

Dela Torre said "modern technology" has made it easier for him to keep track of the things to be done in both regions.

He, however, stressed they need the help of other law enforcement agencies to counter drug-related activities in both regions.

Bacal asked Dela Torre about reports that some police officers are protecting illegal drugs syndicates here in the region.

The illegal drugs czar answered he was installed only two weeks ago and has not looked into the issue.

Still, Dela Torre cited how police officers in Butuan City were dismissed from service after he implemented a "cleansing process" at the PDEA in Caraga. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
