US allocates funds to rebuild Jolo airport, water system (7:20 p.m.)

JOLO, Sulu -- The United States government is giving $3.7 million to the Philippine government to rebuild and renovate the Jolo airport and for the improvement of its potable water system.

Jolo is the capital of Sulu province in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney made this announcement after she inaugurated Monday the 325-meter Jolo market road worth P27 million from the municipality’s port, linking to the town’s public market.

Kenney said the $3.7 million is on top of the $190 million that her government pledged to give over the next five years to improve the lives of the people of Mindanao by developing infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities.

She said that $3 million of the $3.7 million will be used to rebuild and renovate the airport of Jolo while the remaining amount will be spent to improve the water system of the municipality. (Bong Garcia/Sunnex)
