Dumaguete: NegOr board seeks VAT shield for senior citizens (11:00 p.m.)
By Edmund B. Sestoso

DUMAGUETE--Members of the Negros Oriental Provincial Board had passed a resolution requesting the Senate and the House of Representatives to initiate a law exempting senior citizens from the coverage of the Expanded Value Added Tax Law.

Earlier, Congress enacted Republic Act 9257, otherwise known as the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2003, granting senior citizens a 20 percent discount on purchases of goods and services.

However, the PB members noticed that the 20 percent benefit granted to the senior citizens was effectively cut and unfairly reduced with the subsequent passage of the Expanded VAT Law, which subjects without any exemption all transactions for the purchase of goods and services to a 12 percent tax.

It was reported also that the PB of Tarlac sent the same request to the two Houses of Congress.(Sunnex)
