Manila: Arroyo to women's group: Ask Myanmar to free party leader (9:05 p.m.)

MANILA--President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo urged a Women’s Group in New York, organized by American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, to come up with a formal letter asking the Myanmar government to free Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Arroyo and Rice agreed on this action, which the Philippine President raised during the 3rd Meeting of the Women Leader’s Working Group in New York Friday night (Manila time).

Arroyo, speaking at the 62nd United Nations General Assembly also on Friday, reiterated her call for the release of Suu Kyi and for the Myanmar government to take immediate steps towards democracy.

The women's group aims to discuss issues involving women such as education, political and economic empowerment, and access to justice. (JMR/Sunnex)
