DAVAO CITY -- A municipal councilor and his wife were killed in an ambush by motorcycle-riding gunmen along the national highway in the coastal town of Lebak in Sultan Kudarat on Sunday.

Sultan Kudarat Provincial Police Director Suharto Tocao identified the slain councilor as Dionisio Aguelo, who topped the council race in Lebak during the May 14 midterm elections. Also killed was the councilor's wife, Elizabeth.

The two were onboard a motorcycle and were on their way home after visiting a village in Lebak at around 11 a.m. Sunday when hooded gunmen blocked their path and sprayed them with bullets.

Recovered from the crime scene were empty bullets of caliber .45 and .9 mm pistols.

The unidentified attackers readily escaped from the crime scene.

Director Tocao believed the killing was politically-motivated.

Aguelo was known in Lebak to have strong political ties with Moro leaders in the area.

Elizabeth died on the spot while the councilor succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds while being treated at a hospital in Lebak.

Aguelo, relatives said, has been receiving death threats, but refused to identify as to who was behind those when asked by reporters. (With Gary Fuerzas/BOT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
