Coast guard calls off search for 14 crewmen of sunken ship (9:10 p.m.)

MANILA-- The coast guard called off the search for 14 crew members of a cargo ship that sank in shark-infested waters southwest of the Philippine capital last week, a spokesman said Friday.

Four of the 18 crewmen from the Mia were rescued Sunday by a passing fishing vessel, Alice Third, near the southwestern province of Palawan.

"We have already covered the area and there were no traces of the missing crewmen," coast guard spokesman Lt. Armand Balilo said.

The survivors said they were among 11 of the Mia's crew who decided to tie themselves together with a rope, believing they would have a better chance of surviving.

The cargo ship was carrying cement from central Cebu province to Brooke's Point township in Palawan.(AP)
