Davao: 3 miners trapped in Diwalwal cave-in (5:55 p.m.)

DAVAO--Rescuers on Friday discovered two of the three small-scale miners trapped inside a tunnel when it caved in Wednesday afternoon in the gold rush mountain of Diwalwal in Monkayo, Compostela Valley.

The three miners were identified as Julie Salupan, 35, and Generito Salupan, 32, both of San Jose, Surigao del Norte, and Fermin Piquero Jr., 33.

Mt. Diwata barangay captain Franco Tito said the three went inside an area in the tunnel not only identified as danger area due to high risk of caving in, but at the same time an area that is said to contain gold of high quality.

He said though that since Wednesday, personnel of the mining company have been digging into the rubble to clear the area of debris. (BOT of Sun.star Davao)
