KOLAMBUGAN, Lanao del Norte -- A land dispute triggered a shootout from an unidentified armed men in Lumbac, Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte, said Lanao Police Provincial Director Linog Bagul.

At least one policeman from 1007 Mobile Force was killed and five others were seriously wounded including a former Lumbac barangay chairman at 7 a.m. Friday.

Senior Police Officer 2 Jergos Senogat identified the lone fatality as Flaviano Quidivida of Kawit Oriental, Kauswagan.

The wounded troopers were identified as Senior Police Officer 1 Manuel Rivera, Senior Police Officer 2 Arturo Baroquillo, Senior Police Officer 3 Roberto Mediana, a certain Police Officer 3 Banquicio, and a former barangay chairman of Lumbac identified only as Pascan.

Sources said there were 12 members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) mobile team who served as escorts Thursday morning during a dialogue in Lumbac to resolve the land conflict between Christians and Maranaos attended by Lanao del Norte Governor Khalid Dimaporo with PNP and military officials.

Eight of the 12 escorts were left in Lumbac while four others went down to Kolambugan town to buy cell phone loads and food supply.

The remaining team stayed in a health center and later transferred to a copra dryer. When the team was about to take their breakfast a volley of fire got directed to their position prompting the team to return fire.

The wounded police personnel were hit by a grenade launcher.

Police Regional Director Teodorico Capuyan visited the wounded policemen and handed over financial assistance to the victims confined at Sanitarium and Hospital in Iligan City.(Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
