Fire at restaurant in mall hit by blast (5 p.m.)

MANILA -- Panic gripped mall goers after a fire broke out Sunday at one of the restaurants in a popular shopping mall in Makati's financial district that was the scene of a powerful explosion Friday that killed 11 people and injured over a hundred others.

Southern Police District (SPD) Director Luizo Ticman, who is supervising the ongoing operation in the blast site at Glorietta 2, rushed to the Seafood Restaurant at Glorietta 4 when informed of the fire alarm at past noon Sunday.

Ticman said initial investigation conducted by the Makati Fire Department showed the fire originated from the kitchen area of the restaurant. Fire investigators believed that faulty electrical wiring was to blame.

He added that the fire was not in anyway connected to the blast.

At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Ticman said the fire was declared “under control.”

Myrna de los Santos, who was at the mall when the fire occurred, said they saw thick smoke coming out of the restaurant.

Makati fire marshall Jose Embang said the fire started at about 12:02 p.m. and was put under control in less than an hour.

No injuries were reported though a middle-aged woman was brought to an ambulance by rescue personnel after she fainted. (AH/Sunnex)
