Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) Police Director Joel Goltiao said Abdurahman Jamasali, current vice-chairman of the MNLF and his driver were on their way to a dialogue with some MNLF members when gunmen ambushed them in Barangay Buanza in the town of Indanan.
Goltiao said investigation is ongoing to determine the identities of the perpetrators behind the ambush-slaying of Jamasali.
Jamasali had served as undersecretary of the Armm’s Department of Interior and Local Government during the governorship of now jailed MNLF leader Nur Misuari.
He helped in the negotiations for the release of 21 people, including 10 Europeans abducted by the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf in Malaysia seven years ago.
Jamasali ran for the first district congressional seat in the last local elections but lost.
Jamasali’s relatives brought his remains to this city, where he resided.
On September 2, 1996, the MNLF forged a peace accord with the government that ended the decades-old hostilities between the two forces.(Sunnex)
