Army: No ceasefire for sergeant's release
By Carlo P. Mallo

DAVAO CITY –- The military laughed off the ceasefire condition set by the New People's Army (NPA) at Barangay Canidkid in Compostela Valley in exchange for releasing Sergeant Raul Reyes.

In a press statement e-mailed to Sun.Star Davao last week, the Alejandro Lanaja Command-NPA announced that Reyes will be released and reunited with his family if the military implements a suspension of military operations in Monkayo, Montevista, Nabuntuaran and Laak areas in Compostela Valley as well as Veruela, Sta. Josefa, and Loreto in Agusan del Sur.

Reyes was abducted along with two other paramilitary members last October 7 when the NPA raided the 72nd IB-AFP detachment in Canidkid, Montevista, Compostela Valley Province.

"It's funny, they abducted Reyes and now that military operations are full blown to rescue Reyes they want the military operations to stop," Major Medel Aguilar, chief of the 5th Civil Relations Group, told Sun.Star Davao Monday.

Aguilar added it is but a mockery that the NPA even used the phrase "for the soldier's safety," when in truth and in fact it was the rebels who abducted an unarmed and innocent person.

"For the sake of our country and the people, the NPA can better show whatever is left of its self-respect by putting a stop to its senseless and repressive acts against unarmed civilians especially those in far-flung communities," Aguilar said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
