Army troops capture 2 rebels in Zambo Sur operation By Bong Garcia
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Philippine Army troops have captured two gunmen believed to be communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in a pursuit operation in the hinterland of Zamboanga del Sur, a military official said Tuesday.
Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) information officer Major Eugenio Batara Jr. said a soldier was wounded when the NPA rebels fought back the pursuing troops while being cornered in an area by advancing soldiers.

Batara said the rebels were captured on Sunday in Barangay Libayoy in the town of Tigbao.
He said the captured NPA members were part of the group that figured in a firefight with Army troops in the afternoon of October 19 in the nearby town of Lakewood of the same province.
The troops killed three NPA rebels and recovered two M-16 Armalite rifles in the Lakewood clash.
Batara said the captured rebels were listed in military’s Order of Battle (OB) and were brought to the 53rd Infantry Battalion Tactical Command Post for initial investigation and proper disposition of their cases.
Westmincom chief Major General Nelson Allaga commended the troops involved in the encounter for their courage, unquestionable loyalty, and dedication to capture these terrorists, unmindful of the danger and even willing to sacrifice their lives so that the people will realize peace, security, and development in the area.
Batara said the NPAs are losing their fight as manifested by their capture and surrender. They are resorting to banditry and terrorism in order to survive.
“It is the people in the countryside who are burdened and affected greatly with their continued presence. Let us not be intimidated and fooled by the empty promises they are giving,” he said.
He said it has always been the appeal of the military to the peace loving people to cooperate and help the government in its fight against these contemptible organizations, which seeks nothing but to promote fear and danger to innocent civilians nationwide. (Sunnex)
