2 poll candidates killed, 4 others hurt

DAVAO CITY – A village chairman and a youth council candidate were killed in separate incidents while four other candidates for barangay council were hurt just two days before the synchronized elections.

Reelectionist Panfilo Donton, barangay chairman of Talacogon, Lugait, Misamis Oriental was killed by unidentified gunmen Saturday while 16-year-old Sultiro Singguti, a candidate for Youth Council chairman died when armed men sprayed bullets in a gathering in Pigkawayan, North Cotabato.

Four others companions of Singguti were reported injured during the incident.

Those wounded were: Teting Alamada, 56; Norodin Alamada, 38; Melda Alamada, 35 and Uri Hunid, 31, all candidates for barangay council in Barangay Patot, Pigkawayan.

Police authorities in Cotabato said the victims were gathered in a meeting together with barangay chief Norsando Almada at around 5 p.m. Thursday, when his cousin, Abdul Gani Alamada, who is also running for barangay chairman and other companions, appeared and fired at them.

Donton’s and Singguti’s murder were the latest incident of election-related violence ahead of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls on Monday.

Police reported 10 election-related deaths since the start of the election period and the gun ban has been implemented.

Since September 29, police recorded 13 cases of election-related violence. A total of 143 firearms without permit have been confiscated and 150 violators were arrested since the start of the gun ban. (Edgardo Fuerzas/Sunnex)
