90% of Mindanao loses electricity
By Stella A. Estremera

* Flashover melts conductor in Agus 6 switchyard in Iligan City

* Only hospital lines can be powered by Davao Light standby diesel plant

DAVAO CITY – Ninety percent of Mindanao went without power from 1:04 p.m. till early evening Sunday, leaving millions without electricity until dinnertime, and all residents of Davao without water till late at night, as well.

Post your comments on the explosion at the Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City.

Information from the National Transmission Corporation (Transco) in Iligan described the cause of the blackout as a "conductor flashover" at the Agus 6 switchyard of the Abaga-Agus 6 Line 1 in Iligan City.

In electric power transmission, a flashover is an unintended high voltage electric discharge over or arcing or sparking between two or more adjacent conductors.

As a result, the conductors in Agus 6 switchyard melted, the advisory sent through text message said.

The incident caused most of the 138kV power lines of Transco to trip. These power lines were enumerated as the Agus 2-Kibawe Lines 1 and 2, Abaga-Agus 2 Lines 1 and 2, Abaga-Agus 6 Lines 1 and 2, Abaga-Tagoloan, Abaga-Aurora, Abaga-Lugait, and Lugait-Tagoloan.

The Davao Light and Power Company, Davao's service provider, thus operated its 43 megawatts standby diesel power plant and the National Power Corporation's 104-9 MW Power Barge supplying around 25 percent of the power company's franchise area, which also covers Panabo City, Carmen Dujali and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte.

Power was restored from Transco at 6:19 p.m. after several electrical power supply tripping due to problems in synchronization with Transco and over frequency.(Sun.Star Davao)
