New election commissioner named

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed Mindanao Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Moslemen Macarambon as a new commissioner to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), one of her aides said Thursday.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, who is also the Presidential spokesman, said Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita transmitted Wednesday the appointment papers of Macarambon to the Comelec.

Malacanang's pardon order

Post comments here on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's grant of pardon to former President Joseph Estrada.

He said Macarambon has been chosen by the President from a list of nominees submitted to Malacañang, but he does not know when the appointment paper was signed.

A judge for the past 30 years, Macarambon was reportedly recommended by former chief justice and former presidential consultant on electoral reforms Hilario Davide who is now the Philippine representative to the United Nations.

Macarambon had served as judge in the trial courts of Malabang in Lanao del Sur and Iligan City in Lanao del Norte.

Bunye said aside from Macarambon, there are no other new appointees to the Comelec. He added it is unlikely that a new chairman would be named soon after the resignation of Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr. last month.

"I think it would be useless to name a new chairman soon because the remaining or un-expired portion of the term to be served is only up to February next year," Bunye said. The Comelec is now headed by Commissioner Resurreccion Borra.

There are two vacancies in the seven-member commission with two more commissioners expected to retire early next year.

The appointment of Macarambon came on the heels of a supposed shortlist of nominees allegedly forwarded by Malacañang to the Comelec that contained names from the opposition like lawyer Rene Saguisag and Cagayan de Oro City Representative Rufus Rodriguez. Ermita denied releasing the list. (JMR/Sunnex)
