Village cop, councilman slain in ambush
KIDAPAWAN CITY -- A newly proclaimed barangay councilor in Makilala in North Cotabato and a village guard were shot dead by still unidentified armed men along the highway in Barangay Malasila at past midnight Thursday.
Makilala police chief Ramel Hojilla identified the victims as Barangay Malasila councilor Roger Mazo and village guard Errol Usop, who also worked as contractual employee of the Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) in North Cotabato.

The two were on their way home aboard a blue Jansie motorcycle, when waylaid by a still undetermined number of armed men.
The assailants, Hojilla said, used high-powered firearms based on the slugs recovered from the crime scene.
Mazo and Usop had just attended a village disco when they were ambushed.
Police have yet to determine if the killing was politically motivated.
Initial reports, however, said that an hour before the killing, Usop had a heated altercation with one of the villagers that joined the "Disco ng Barangay."
Usop at that time was one of the village guards assigned in the area.
Mazo's wife told investigators that her husband was a good person and has no political foes in their village.
Hojilla said they already dispatched personnel to Sitio Patulangon to conduct pursuit operations.
Authorities are not discounting the possibility that an armed group is behind the killing. The area where the killing took place is a hotbed of communist rebels. (Malu Cadelina Manar/Sun.Star Davao)
