Oro lawmaker said he was offered Comelec top post
By Danilo V. Adorador III

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Cagayan de Oro 1st district Representative Rufus Rodriguez said Malacañang has offered him the chairmanship of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) but he has refused it.

The name of the Cagayan de Oro lawmaker was included in the supposed shortlist of nominees for commissioner allegedly forwarded by Malacañang to the Comelec.

Rodriguez said, though, that he would prefer lawmaking to heading a controversial post.

Just last Thursday, Malacañang appointed Iligan City Regional Trial Court Judge Moslemen Macarambon to this vacant post.

Commissioner Resurreccion Borra has been named acting chairman after the resignation of former Comelec chair Benjamin Abalos Sr. at the height of the ZTE deal controversy.

Representative Rodriguez said the chairmanship is being offered to him. However, he said the only chance he would accept the job is if his constituents favor the move.

"But I don't think they would want me to take that job. They elected me precisely to serve them," he told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

A judge for the past 30 years, Macarambon was reportedly recommended by former chief justice and former presidential consultant on electoral reforms Hilario Davide, who is now the Philippine representative to the United Nations.

Macarambon had served as judge in the trial courts of Malabang in Lanao del Sur and Iligan City in Lanao del Norte.

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said aside from Macarambon, there are no other new appointees to the Comelec.

He added it is unlikely that a new chairman would be named soon after the resignation of Abalos last month because the remaining term of the latter is only up to February next year. (With reports from Sunnex)
