Palace unfazed by ‘Erap support’ for impeach raps v. Arroyo

MANILA –- Malacañang dismissed reports that pardoned former President Joseph Estrada is supporting a new impeachment bid against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, saying that the opposition knows its law.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita reminded the opposition Saturday that they will have to wait another year as an impeachment complaint has already been initiated in the House of Representatives.

“We all know Congress follows this law. If an impeachment complaint has already been initiated before the committee on justice, no other complaint can be filed until one year later,” Ermita said on government-run dzRB radio.

He noted that lawyer Rafael Pulido already filed an impeachment complaint last October 5 and that this had already been transmitted to the committee on justice.

Still, the opposition said it is filing another complaint on Monday, when Congress resumes session after a one-month recess.

“The opposition just wants media mileage, especially with the claim that Estrada is supporting the impeachment bid. For us, there’s nothing to worry because we know our law and they should too,” Ermita said.

Impeachment mode

After going on full alert for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections and the All Saints’ and All Souls’ days weekend, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is gearing up for “impeachment mode.”

PNP chief Avelino Razon Jr. said Saturday that while the full alert for the All Saints’ weekend will last until Sunday, police are keeping tabs on developments for Monday.

“We are preparing for that. As always, we will exercise maximum tolerance,” Razon said over dzRB radio.

For the moment, Razon said the 120,000-strong PNP will remain on full alert until Sunday when people who went to the provinces to spend the long weekend return for school and work.

He said he ordered police, including 5,000 personnel in Metro Manila, to keep watch over seaports, airports, and bus terminals. (JMR/Sunnex)
