Critics launch online petition v. Arroyo, de Castro
MANILA -- A coalition of anti-government groups on Wednesday introduced an online petition calling for the immediate resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Vice President Noli de Castro.
The petition titled “Manifesto Calling for the Immediate Resignation of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Noli de Castro and for the Holding of Special (Snap) Elections within 60 Days” aims to prevent “situation from developing into a full-scale conflict or civil strife.”

In the petition, the coalition asserted that the President “has lost public sympathy and support” following the still unresolved cases of election irregularities that took place last May 2004 where the Chief Executive and former Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Virgilio Garcillano Jr. were heard in a wiretapped conversation discussing how to rig the results of the elections in favor of President Arroyo.
“Because of the numerous unresolved scandals involving the present administration, including but not limited to the ‘Hello Garci’ election controversy, National Broadband Network-ZTE deal, NorthRail Project, Diosdado Macapagal Highway scandals, Joc-joc Bolante fertilizer scam, Jose Pidal caper, hundreds of unresolved extrajudicial killings and Malacañang bribery incident, the President has completely lost her moral authority to govern this country,” the petition reads.
For de Castro, the group said: “Vice President Noli de Castro is a member of the Arroyo Cabinet and is a beneficiary of the cheating perpetrated during the May 2004 elections and is also considered to be a silent partner in crime of the President not only because of his close personal association and unflinching support for Arroyo but also because of his failure to stand up against and denounce the abuses and excesses of the Arroyo regime.”
Among the signatories of the petition include Senators Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Antonio Trillanes IV, former senator Serge Osmeña, and leaders of various cause-oriented groups. (MSN/Sunnex)
