NBI: Trader likely died from car crash
By Stephen Capillas

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Autopsy results on the remains of a gasoline station owner found dead at Upper Carmen in Cagayan de Oro City last Friday showed he sustained injuries related to vehicle collision.

This was the finding of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Region 10 during an autopsy on Edmondo Gorgonia.

Gorgonia was found lying dead on the road. Near him was a green Mitsubishi Adventure vehicle that is not registered under his name.

Vice Mayor Vicente Emano has said Gorgonia's death was not a result of carjacking but due to a vehicular accident.

NBI 10 medico-legal officer Dr. Tammy Uy said based on their examination, the victim sustained "traumatic injuries" that may have been inflicted by collision with a high-speed vehicle.

"There's no indication of foul play or injuries that may have been caused by blunt force trauma inflicted through blows, stabbings, or even gunshots," Uy explained in a radio interview.

Emano said his sources told him that whoever was responsible for Gorgonio's death panicked and used the victim's car as a getaway vehicle.

It could not have been robbery or murder, he added, because the suspect left his own vehicle at the scene.

"Would you leave your own vehicle there that is registered in your name in the first place?" Emano said in the dialect.

Another possibility, he said, is that the other figure in the collision might not be the owner of the car left at the scene.

Gorgonia, a gasoline station owner in Cagayan de Oro, was found dead in a grassy area in Barangay Upper Carmen. His car and wallet were missing and his cell phone was broken, police said.

Police found a slightly battered green Mitsubishi Adventure vehicle near where Gorgonia's body was found, fuelling speculations that the businessman might have been a victim of carjacking.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) identified the vehicle as belonging to a person from Marawi City, through its plate number. Sun.Star is withholding the name of the car owner because it has yet to get his side on the matter.

Investigators are also looking at other angles, one that involves Gorgonio's businesses. His family said the businessman had made enemies in his business circle.

Gorgonio's body was brought to Manila where he will be cremated, police quoted his wife as saying. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
