Pilot killed, 1 hurt in midair collision By Carlo P. Mallo
DAVAO CITY -- Two airplanes used for aerial spraying of banana plantations collided midair Monday. One pilot died while another was brought to a hospital.
According to reports gathered by Sun.Star Davao, the collision happened at around 8 a.m. in Purok 13 of Lower Mabini, Barangay Maniki in the municipality of Kapalong, Davao del Norte.

The two airplanes were spraying chemicals in the vast banana plantations in Davao del Norte Monday when the incident occurred.
The pilots were only identified by their last names.
One Captain Laguda was rushed to the Kapalong Hospital while Captain Cahucom died on impact.
The two light aircrafts were owned by Mactan & Airworks Aviations.
The aircrafts were under contract with the AM Soriano Banana Plantation Company.
Stephen Antig, vice president for Corporate Planning of AM Soriano Group of Companies, expressed regret for what happened although he believes it was but an accident.
Still, he said, they will be asking the plane owner to investigate the incident.
Air Transportation Office (ATO)-Southern Mindanao Assistant Port Manager Jose Emmanuel Saddam said they have already reported the incident to the ATO head office in Manila and are still waiting for a word from the agency.
Investigation on the cause of the collision is now underway.
Aerial spraying is a method used by large-scale banana plantations to spray chemicals on banana plants to prevent diseases, especially the much-dreaded Black Sigatoka Disease. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
