MANILA -- Nine people died at the height of tropical storm Lando in the Bicol, Western and Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao and Caraga regions, a ranking official of the Camp Aguinaldo-based National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said on Tuesday.

NDCC executive officer Glenn Rabonza said five others were injured and two were still missing as of Tuesday afternoon due to the weather disturbance.

Rabonza, who is also the administrator of the Office of the Civil Defense, said five of the fatalities died in a landslide in Surigao del Norte while two other victims died also in a landslide in Surigao City.

The eighth fatality was swept by flashfloods in Cebu City while the ninth fatality was from Iligan City but the circumstances of the death were not immediately known.

In Cebu province and Surigao City, Rabonza said five were injured in separate landslides. On the other hand, the two were reported missing due to a landslide in Surigao del Norte.

Rabonza said at least 3,276 families or 16,463 persons have been affected by the weather disturbance. Of the figure, 2,349 families or 11,750 persons are housed in evacuation centers where relief workers are attending to their needs.

Power interruptions in Cebu City happened but officials said 90 percent of the electricity had already been restored.

In Iligan City, the local government declared the city under state of calamity. Four transmissions towers collapsed due to typhoon Lando.

In Bicol and Northern Mindanao, a number of thoroughfares have been declared either non-passable. (VR/Sunnex)
