Roxas is LP's bet for 2010's presidential polls (2:57 p.m.)
MANILA -- Senator Mar Roxas was the hands down choice of the majority members of Liberal Party (LP) to be their presidential bet in the 2010 presidential elections, party stalwarts said Wednesday.
Former senate president Franklin Drilon made the announcement during a forum in Pasay City where he and Bukidnon Congressman Neric Acosta were the guests.
Drilon who is also the LP president said the choice of Roxas was due to his untainted name and his knowledge of economics which he added is a very important factor for a leader of a country like the Philippines facing a host of problems as it embarks on the road towards modernization.
"Malinis ang pangalan ni Sen. Roxas, hindi siya na-involve sa anumang anomalya kahit noon pa and he can be a unifying leader of the country," Drilon said.
The 50-year old lawmaker is the grandson of former Philippine president Manuel Roxas and the son of former Senator Gerry Roxas. He attended Ateneo de Manila University for elementary and high school education, then earned a degree in economics from Wharton School of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.
Before entering public service, he worked as an investment banker, mobilizing venture capital funds for small and medium scale enterprises.
Drilon said that aside from these qualification, Roxas has the "winnability factor" needed to win a national election.
In the 2004 presidential election where he ran for senator, Roxas garnered 19, 371, 888 votes, the highest number of votes garnered by a national candidate in any Philippine election.
For this, the LP leadership will elect Roxas as the new party president when the party's National Executive Council (NECO) meet on November 26 in Manila.(AHA/Sunnex) |
