ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Isabela City Mayor Cherrylyn Santos-Akbar said they have already chosen a candidate to run in the special election for the vacant position of the lone congressional district of Basilan province.

The Basilan congressional district seat was left vacant after Congressman Wahab Akbar died in a powerful explosion that hit the South Wing of the Batasan complex last November 13 in Quezon City.
Mayor Akbar said they have chosen Rajam, the sister of the late congressman, to run for Congress once a special election will be conducted.
Rajam is one of the three Basilan representatives in the unicameral Regional Legislative Assembly (RLA) of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).
The other two Basilan RLA members are Bonnie Abdulaziz Balamo and Hatimil Hassan.
Mayor Akbar said Rajam was chosen to replace his slain brother when the Akbar clan and supporters recently met in preparation for the special election.
However, the Commission on Election (Comelec) is still waiting for the House of Representatives to call for a special election for Basilan’s lone congressional seat.
Akbar served for more than four months in Congress before the bomb attack ended his life.
Three others, including one of Akbar’s staff, died during the Batasan blast that also left several others wounded including Representatives Henry Teves of Negros Oriental and Luzviminda Ilagan of the party-list Gabriela.
