A tricycle driver discovered the IED placed inside a carton and left at Quezon Avenue in Cotabato City fronting the Petron gasoline station.

Elements of the Army's Bomb Disposal Battalion led by Colonel Mario Antonio Jr. immediately responded to the area and defused the bomb.

Witnesses said a man onboard a motorcycle left the bomb.

Authorities suspect that extortionist group Al-Khobar could be responsible for another attempt to sow terror in Central Mindanao.

Saturday's incident came two days after a bomb exploded inside the KMCC Mall in Kidapawan City Thursday afternoon that killed a mall employee and wounded eight others.

Authorities blame Al-Khobar, an extortionist group, for the latest Kidapawan bombing.

The Al-Khobar group reportedly demanded P500,000 from Kidapawan City Mayor Rodolfo Gantuangco minutes before the explosion.

Initial findings by bomb experts showed that the suspects used a pipe bomb, cell phone detonated improvised bomb. Damage was estimated at P300,000.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) readily denied a hand in the explosion at the Kidapawan mall. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
