Atienza won’t attend scheduled LP election

MANILA -- Environment Secretary and Liberal Party (LP) member Jose Atienza said Sunday he will not attend Monday’s scheduled elections of the political party at the Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City because he and his faction were not formally invited to it.

Atienza said he was not aware of the reported media announcements that they are welcome to the gathering. He said the reported invitation is another lie, comparing it to the announcement by former senator Franklin Drilon in July 2005 that the party was withdrawing its support for President Arroyo. That announcement precipitated the breakaway of Atienza from the party.

When asked if he will attend the meeting if he is officially invited to it, Atienza said he will have to think about it.

The LP-National Executive Council (Neco) is scheduled to convene Monday to elect its next party president to replace Drilon. Among the names being floated is that of incumbent senator and LP executive vice president Manuel Roxas II.

Atienza said what his faction wants is for the Drilon group to recognize them and to listen to their suggestions, including the election of LP-affiliated local government officials to the Neco.

He said that if the LP is composed of 2,000 officials and members, then it should also be all the 2,000 officials and members that should be present in the LP meeting to elect their new set of party leaders.

Atienza said that if Drilon’s group pushes through with their election, they will question it before the Supreme Court. He said they opted not to seek any restraining order from the court because they want to give Roxas a chance to prove himself as a uniting, sincere and independent leader. (JMR/Sunnex)
