Gov’t offers 1M reward for Faeldon arrest

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has approved recommendations by National Police Chief Avelino Razon Jr., raising a P1 million reward for the capture of fugitive Marine Captain Nicanor Faeldon.

Faeldon escaped during last Thursday's coup attempt at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City where his group, led by Brigadier General Danilo Lim and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, withdrew support from the President.

"We expect that the reward offer will encourage people in the community to provide us with information that will lead to the early arrest of persons involved," said Razon in announcing the President's approval.

Razon said a team has been deployed to track down Faeldon, who was previously assigned with the Force Recon, an elite unit of the Philippine Marines.

The team is coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, which is exerting its own effort to find Faeldon.

Malacañang on Saturday also appealed to the public to help locate Faeldon and at least three others who remain at large following Thursday's Makati standoff.

"Nananawagan tayo sa taumbayan, kung sino nakakakilala sa elementong ito i-report sa mga awtoridad para magkaroon ng katahimikan sa ating bansa (We appeal to the public to report to authorities if they spot Faeldon and his pals who are still at large)," Presidential Management Staff (PMS) head Cerge Remonde said on government-run dzRB radio.

He added that while a curfew had been lifted and police claim everything is normal, there is still reason to remain vigilant as other threats to peace and order still remain.

"We continue to remain vigilant against other sources of threat to national security especially terrorist groups like Abu Sayyaf, communist insurgents, etcetera," said Remonde.

Faeldon is one of the core leaders of the short-lived Oakwood mutiny in July 2003. He escaped during a court hearing in December 2005 but was recaptured January 2006. (PNA/JMR/Sunnex)
