Police cancel all vacations, braces for full alert on holidays

CEBU -- To ensure they can immediately respond to situations during the Christmas holidays, all police officers will be unable to avail themselves of vacation leaves from Dec. 15 up to the New Year.

“We are on red alert while you are on vacation,” said Police Regional Office 7 Director Ronald Roderos.

Roderos also wants to make sure that the departure and arrival of passengers at bus terminals will be systematic, unlike what happened during the Nov. 1 holiday where passengers jumped into buses without waiting in line.

He told reporters yesterday that acting Mandaue City Police Office Director Rodel Calungsud has until Dec. 21 to give him a written report on the flow of passengers at the North Bus Terminal.

He plans to request Triton Communication Corp. for the use of surveillance cameras for the terminal.

The surveillance cameras that were purchased to secure the ceremonial routes for the 12th Asean Summit last January are still in certain areas of Metro Cebu.

Because the purchase is still being questioned, the cameras have not been formally turned over to police and are still the property of Triton.

Roderos said he will ask Senior Supt. Mariano Natuel of the Regional Operations and Plans Division to request them if they could monitor the terminal from Triton’s office for the duration of the holidays.

Roderos is also urging those who plan to attend the dawn masses to make sure their homes are well secured.

He said homeowners should not leave the house empty, should have an alarm system or a guard dog, or should ask a neighbor to check on the house once in a while.
“Don’t wear jewelry. Kung magdala, yung fake na lang (wear fake jewelry),” Roderos said in jest.

Police will be coordinating with parish security groups to ensure the security of churchgoers.

Meanwhile, the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office and Firearms Explosives Security Agencies/Guards Supervisory Section will be closely inspecting firecracker factories in Barangay Babag.

Roderos has instructed the Police Community Relations to begin an information dissemination campaign asking all gun holders, including those with licenses, not to fire their guns on the eves of Christmas and New Year. (MEA)
