Cops readied to serve as BETs on special polls
By Bong Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- An official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the autonomous region said they will utilize policemen as Board of Election Tellers (BETs) in case teachers will not report for BET duty in the region's forthcoming special synchronized Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and barangay elections.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) Comelec Assistant Regional Director Vidzfar Juli said it is one of the anticipatory measures they discussed in a dialogue last week with Comelec Commissioner Moslemen Macarambaon, Armm commission-in-charge.

Juli said they have anticipated that some of the teachers will not report to serve as BETs during the special elections due to intimidation or threats on their lives.

Some of the teachers in areas where there will be special elections did not report during October's SK and barangay elections.

The Comelec has set the special SK and barangay polls on December 15 in villages where there were failure or no elections at all held last October 29.

Juli said special elections will be held in more than 200 barangays in Armm.

Armm is comprised of the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Shariff Kabunsuan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, and Marawi City.

Aside from the Armm, special elections will also be conducted in some of the barangays in the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Sur, Cotabato, and Pasay City. (Sunnex)
