ZAMBOANGA CITY -- An improvised bomb exploded Wednesday night in front of the ancestral home of an election official in Sulu province in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

The incident was the second that took place in Sulu few days before the scheduled December 15 special synchronized Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and barangay elections. The first occurred last Saturday evening.
Armm Police Director Joel Goltiao on Thursday said the explosion occurred around 11:57 p.m. Wednesday outside the ancestral home of election officer Vidzfar Juli in Barangay Kajatian in the town of Indanan.
Goltiao said no one was reported injured. Juli, who used to stay in his ancestral home whenever he is in Sulu, is in Manila at the time of the incident.
The explosion damaged a vehicle inside the garage of the Juli's ancestral home as well as its gate and windows.
Goltiao said they already have suspects behind the incident including that of last Saturday's bomb explosion in front of the Sulu provincial election office but "we have no strong evidence against them."
The bomb explosion in front of the election office last Saturday destroyed the office's door and shattered windows as well as some of the computer units inside the building.
Goltiao said the type of explosives that were used in the two incidents were similar, which they termed as improvised explosive device (IED).
The IED contain ammonium nitrate that is commonly used in agriculture as a high-nitrogen fertilizer.
Goltiao said they have yet to confer with Juli to determine the people who are targeting the election official or people who hold grudge against him.
"Definitely it (bomb attack) has something to do with my function as an election officer," said Juli.
Aside from being the election supervisor of Sulu province, Juli is also the assistant election officer of Armm that comprises six provinces and one city.
Juli said the two incidents was an attack to his family, government properties, and a government official being an election officer of Sulu and that of the Armm.
He said he is leaving the incidents to the police authorities since it is their job to do so.
However, Juli said he wondered why the police don't have the result yet in their investigation over the incidents especially that of last Saturday's bomb attack at his office.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is pre-occupied in the preparation for the December 15 special synchronized SK and barangay elections in the country.
The Comelec will conduct special elections in at least 200 barangays in Armm and 70 of them are in the Province of Sulu. (Sunnex)For more Philippine news, visit Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro. (December 14, 2007 issue) Write letter to the editor. Click here. Join the Sun.Star message board. Click here. |
