Hostage taker shot dead (1:35 p.m.)

MANILA -- Police shot dead a former overseas worker in Pasay city after he went amuck and held hostage three people, including his two nieces inside their home before dawn Friday.

Pasay police chief, S/Supt. Marietto Valerio identified the hostage-taker as Renato Pascual, 42 years old and a former overseas worker who sustained four gunshot wounds on his chest and was declared dead on arrival at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital.

Investigation said the incident took place at Maginhawa Street, Zone 1, Barangay 14 about 12:20 a.m. when Pascual arrived home drunk and took a knife from the kitchen. He held a certain Marinel Licuar hostage.

Residents immediately informed the local police and a SWAT team arrived while other policemen secured the area from kibitzers.

Aside from Licuar, the victim also held hostage Gladys Pascual and April Rose Japinal. (AH/Sunnex)
