Iloilo: Case filed v. Treñas, others on housing project anew (11:29 a.m.)

THE Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC-Iloilo) has filed another case against Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas and the former members of the City Council over the “unresolved” P130 million Iloilo City Employees Housing Project in Ungka, Pavia, Iloilo.

The group represented by secretary general Ted Aldwin Ong and chairperson lawyer Romeo Gerochi filed a case before the Regional Trial Court (RTC) asking for a writ of mandamus.

The writ would direct the City Government to enforce the contract entered into by the City of Iloilo and Ace Builders Enterprises, the contractor that abandoned the project.

The group highlighted in its petition that the City Council "has passed not only one but four resolutions calling on the mayor to rescind, terminate, and take over the project as stipulated in the contract but the said resolutions were ignored and were not acted upon by Mayor Jerry Treñas."

According to FDC, the housing project "is spurious, irregular and not in accordance with the law, as such, it is an illegitimate debt. This project is a showcase of corruption. The P130 million loan obtained by the City Government was already fully paid by the Treñas administration, despite the glaring corruption, mismanagement, and the failure of the project."
