Comelec: Special polls peaceful
MANILA -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Saturday declared the special elections of the 370 villages for the synchronized Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and barangay elections as generally peaceful and orderly.
"Everything seems peaceful so far," said Comelec spokesman James Jimenez.

According to Jimenez, reports from their field personnel showed no indications of any violence or any major untoward incidents. "So far, we have not received any reports of any major disturbances or untoward incidences," he said.
The Comelec declared failure of elections in at least 370 barangays in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) and in other provinces in the Southern part after teachers serving as member of the Board of Election Tellers (BET) refused to serve and convene last October 29 due to security threats.
"Reports reaching us from the Armm also indicate that the elections there was concluded peacefully," he added.
Because of the security problem, the Comelec has decided to beef up the security by adding more police and military personnel in the areas.
"More than a thousand PNP (Philippine National Police) personnel have been deployed to provide security for the elections this time round," Jimenez said.
The polling precincts closed down at 3 p.m. Saturday and canvassing of the votes are expected to follow immediately.
In Armm, the special elections were conducted in Sulu, Tawi-tawi, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Basilan.
Other areas where special SK and barangay polls where held are in Pasay City, Zaboanga Sibugay, Zamboaga del Norte, and in Cotabato.
Voters' turnout was also good, Jimenez said, adding that they expect to learn the results until Monday. (MSN/Sunnex)
