Troops kill mid-level Sayyaf leader in clash
By Bong Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Government troops killed one of the alleged mid-level leaders of the al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf wanted by the US government in a clash on the island province of Tawi-Tawi.

The Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) reported that Abdul Mubin Sakandal was killed in a clash with government troops around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Sakandal was killed in joint operations carried out by troops from the Philippine Marines and Navy stationed in the province of Tawi-Tawi.

The NFWM reported that Sakandal was allegedly involved in the kidnappings of foreign and Filipino citizens in Sipadan, Malaysia in 2000 and in Dos Palmas, Palawan in 2001.

The US is offering up to $20,000 for Sakandal's arrest for his involvement in the kidnapping of American citizens.

The Philippine government has also put up a separate P2 million reward for the neutralization of Sakandal.

Aside from being a mid-level leader, Sakandal is also said to be the brother-in-law of Khadaffy Janjalani, who was killed by government forces late last year in the province of Sulu.

Also, government troops are continuously pursuing the remaining leaders of the Abu Sayyaf in the provinces of Basilan and Sulu like Isnilon Hapilon, Dr. Abu Pula, and one-armed leader Radulan Sahiron.

The other mid-level leaders that are being pursued by the government troops are Yasser Igasan and Ibni Acosta, both from the Janjalani group; Salip Abdullah, Itting Sailani, and Anni Sailani from Jumdail of Abu Pula group; Suhud Tanadjalin, Gonggong Sali, of the Hapilon group; and Jul Asbi Jalmaani, Juhurim Hussein, Marad Astig, Kirih Hamid Sahiron, Julie Ikit, and Kirin Isnirul from the Sahiron group.

The Janjalani and Hapilon groups are the so-called Basilan-based Abu Sayyafs while the group of Pula and Sahiron is Sulu-based. (Sunnex)
