3 police generals awarded for ending Peninsula siege
MANILA -- Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director Avelino Razon Jr. has commended three police generals in recognition of their exemplary acts to thwart the Peninsula siege last November 29.
Razon, along with Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, took turns in conferring the Medalya ng Kabayanihan awards to National Capitol Region Police Office (NCRPO) Chief Geary Barias, Southern Police District Chief Luizo Ticman, and PNP Special Action Force (SAF) Chief Leocadio Santiago Jr.

The three were awarded "for their exceptional courage and leadership when the group of Magdalo mutineers led by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and Army Brigadier General Danilo Lim seized the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City."
Razon said: "The PNP and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) fully recognize the excellent supervision and expertise shown by Barias in handling the event and his strong determination to end the crisis that led to the peaceful surrender and arrest of the personalities involved in the Manila Peninsula standoff including former Vice President Teofisto Guingona and Bishops Julio Labayen, and Antonio Tobias."
Other than Barias, the roles of Ticman and Santiago in managing the crisis caused by the Peninsula standoff were also commended for their resolute action to end the crisis in an orderly and peaceful manner that had prevented the loss of lives and secured the public from destabilization.
Aside from the three police generals, the PNP also conferred the Medalya ng Katapangan awards to Senior Inspector Agosto Asuncion, non-police officer Domingo Robles, Aldrin Tayaban, Erwin Bascos, and Dominic Rosario, all from the SAF unit for their conspicuous acts of courage and gallantry in action as members of the assault team during the implementation of the warrant of arrest against Fahkir Said alias Abu Jandal on November 15 in Payatas, Quezon City.
The serving of warrant turned into minutes of firefight between the SAF and the subject of the warrant that resulted in the neutralization of Abu Jandal, Ridwan Indama, and Saing Indama, and the arrest of three others, all suspects in the Batasan bombing.
Also awarded with the Medalya ng Kadakilaan were Senior Superintendent Roberto Damian of PNP-SAF for his remarkable achievement in the Peninsula standoff, Senior Superintendent Asher Dolina for his exceptional meritorious achievement as overall supervisor in the implementation of warrant against Abu Jandal, Chief Inspector Hermogenes Cabe, Inspector Bryan Dexter Andulan, and seven other troopers from the SAF.
The PNP also conferred the Medalya ng Kagalingan to Superintendent Michel Amos Filart and six other Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) policemen for their remarkable participation in the investigation on the Peninsula siege.
Puno said the awardees are fitting exemplification of what a real "Mamang Pulis" should be -- always ready to face danger and offers no room for people who do not have regard for the rule of law.
"Time and again, we have shown the world the stability of our democratic institutions and the strength of this government. Our strong republic is underlined by a strong economy that has the full support of the Filipino people," Puno said. (VR/Sunnex)
