Dancing jailbirds can join Sinulog show, City says

CEBU CITY -- The now famous dancing inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) will hold a "high-end" concert next month.

Capitol consultant on security Byron Garcia hopes to give some Cebuanos a preview of what the prisoners will do during the Sinulog festival, if it gets approved by the Sinulog Foundation Inc.

Garcia said he will write a letter to the foundation addressing security concerns.

Hopefully, there will be no opposition considering the hundreds of letters he received from Filipinos living outside the country who want to see the "dancing inmates" live, and not just in the Internet.

The inmates will not be joining the parade, but will dance on stage at the Cebu City Sports Complex.

At least 100 of the participating inmates will be chosen randomly.

Garcia said the only qualification is that they are provincial prisoners, not insular. The latter refers to convicted felons who are about to be shipped out of CPDRC.

As to the dancing ability, Garcia said it is not a problem since each one of the 1,572 inmates knows how to dance.

CPDRC will be providing one-is-to-one security personnel for the dancers during their Sinulog performance.

In the early 1990s, then Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center warden Gaudioso Navales was allowed to bring a group of inmates to join the Sinulog parade.

The city jail inmates danced to the Sinulog beat, albeit, cordoned for security reasons.

Choreographer Gwen Lador said she will prepare a dance routine that will be four minutes and 40 seconds long.

On stage, the "dancing inmates" will dance to Garcia's prepared music with a live band.

Garcia said the inmates themselves want to dance during the Sinulog as an offering to the Señor Santo Niño.

"Some contingents are banking on props and costumes to win. These inmates will be purely dancing and are banking on choreography and precision and will be dancing as halad (offering)," Garcia told Sun.Star Cebu.

But before the Sinulog festivities on Jan. 20, CPDRC plans to hold a concert at the provincial jail showcasing their different dances, including the famed "Thriller" dance.

The Thriller dance caught the attention of web surfers globally, gaining the fifth spot of the Time Magazine's top 10 web videos for the journal's "Best of the Year" issue.

CPDRC will also showcase the popular algorithm dance.

Aside from that, prisoners will also show off two new dances: "Jump" by the Pointer Sisters and "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins.

Garcia explained that it will be a "high-end" concert for the benefit of the inmates.

He wants to sell the tickets for P1,500 but he is still looking for an event organizer to plan the concert.

Audience will be limited to 150 people. (Jujemay G. Awit of Sun.Star Cebu)
