2 die, 26 hurt in vehicle mishap

BAGUIO CITY -- Two people were killed while 26 others were injured when a jeepney loaded with passengers fell into a 100-meter deep ravine at a barangay in the town of Tublay in Benguet at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Eleven-year-old Willan Padio was killed instantly while 64-year-old Mary Marcos died on the way to the Benguet General Hospital.

Slippery roads brought about by the intermittent rains caused the accident. The driver found the slick road difficult to navigate and lost control of his vehicle causing it to fall into the ravine, the Office of Civil Defense in the Cordillera said in a report.

The passengers were on their way back to Tublay from a reunion in Kapangan, Benguet when the accident happened.

Tublay is about 16 kilometers away from Baguio City.

The injured passengers were brought to the Benguet hospital for treatment. Others were later transferred to either the Baguio General Hospital or the Pines City Doctors Hospital, also located in Baguio City.

Those who sustained multiple injuries include Kenneth Marcos (10), Huly Dagupen (64), Kerli Miguel (24), Lalet Bangilan (18), Carly Dimas (26), Mylene Miguel (20), Gemma Bangilan (18), Linda Dagupen (60), and Luisa Picart (63). They were admitted at Benget General Hospital for treatment.

Susan Padio (32) and Wilfred Padio (48) also sustained multiple injuries. They were transferred to PCDH from Benguet, while Miguel Yoglas (69) and driver Nestor Mariano (51), who sustained multiple injuries, were transferred to the Baguio General Hospital.

Rubbie Aquilino (28), Christian Marcos (3), Maricole Marcos (10), Arvin Dagupen (8), Mark Bulong (26), Joshua Ampiso (2), Junior Inlubong (54), Riza Fernando (12), Jupiter Besic (29), Joan Inlubang (14), Gemma Boguilas (12, Aide Olsim (20) and Lito Betidio (36) sustained minor injuries and were released after treatment.

Groups who responded to the incident included the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Center of Benguet Province, Philippine National Red Cross-Benguet, BEGH, Philippine National Police-Tublay, La Trinidad and Baguio City Fire Stations, Baguio City Emergency Services (BCEMS), Baguio-Benguet Public Communication Action Group (BBPICAG), 911 On Call, and the Police Cordillera Regional Office.
