DOH-Central Luzon officials identified the stray bullet victim as James Capati Casupawan, 25, who was confined at the Diosdado Macapagal District Hospital in Guagua town as of this writing Thursday afternoon.

According to Dr. Irene Canlas, officer-in-charge of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (Resu) of the DOH, Casupawan was hit last Tuesday night by a bullet from a homemade pistol.

Canlas said that as of 2 p.m. Thursday, initial reports showed that a total of 227 persons were injured due to minor blast and burn incidents in the entire region.

Among the Central Luzon provinces that submitted firecracker-related incidents were Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Zambales.

Canlas however reported a "zero case" of death due to firecrackers.

Most of the victims of firecracker injuries recorded during the New Year's Eve revelry, were children aged 13 and below.

Ninety-seven percent of the total number of firecracker injuries recorded this year involved minor blast injuries and three percent were eye injuries.

Earlier, DOH and police authorities warned the public to be extra careful and avoid illegal firecrackers.

In the New Year's Eve celebrations in 2006 alone, health officials recorded some 284 people injured due to firecracker-related incidents. Majority of the victims were wounded by powerful and illegal firecrackers. (MHD/Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
