Defense chief bares another destabilization plot (9:36 p.m.)

MANILA -- Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro revealed on Friday that rightist groups may launch another attempt to grab power this year.

Teodoro, however, declined to elaborate, saying the assessment was made in general terms.

"I believe it's an assessment of our intelligence services. (It's) just a general assessment, the actual details I've not received. There is a possibility that there might be destabilization by various threat groups," he said.

He said: "Right now, as far as I can see, it's (threat) not. But you know information just crops up suddenly, things like these are really done below ground level and it's hard to get credible information on it, it just happens."

Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. vowed to end any power grab attempt quicker than the November 29 siege of the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City led by former First Scout Ranger Regiment commander Danilo Lim and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
