2 rebels die, another hurt in Laguna raid

MANILA -- Two members of New People's Army (NPA) were killed while another was "critically wounded" following a clash with government forces in a remote village in Pila town in Laguna on Saturday, the military reported.

Army spokesman Ernesto Torres said Army's 1st Infantry Battalion troops found three women in a house near the encounter site and efforts are underway to verify if they are connected with the communist insurgents.

He said the clash with undetermined number of rebels erupted at 8 a.m. Saturday when the soldiers raided a suspected communist lair at the village of Masiko.

He added that the fighting resulted in the death of two rebels and wounding of another who was taken to a nearby hospital for "emergency treatment."

However, the names of the slain and wounded rebels were not immediately known.

Torres said the troops recovered from the scene three high-powered and two short firearms, and a homemade bomb.

"Two other women in the (rebel) occupied house were rescued by soldiers and are presumed innocent civilians," he said, adding that the operation was conducted in collaboration with the Laguna Provincial Police.

"The Laguna Provincial Police earlier conducted checkpoints in nearby areas to constrict possible escapees," said Torres.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), has about 5,700 fighters as the end of December 2007.

Peace talks with the communists bogged down in 2004 when US classified the CPP and NPA as foreign terrorist organizations. (VR/Sunnex)
