Arroyo calls on Congress to pass 2008 budget

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday called for an agreement between the Senate and the House of Representatives to pass the proposed 2008 national budget as soon as possible.

She said the budget would fund the anti-poverty measures and safety nets for the rising prices of oil products and basic commodities.

Arroyo also said the immediate enactment of the budget is needed to finish the irrigation projects and farm-to-market roads before the next planting season in order to increase the income of the farmers and the amount of affordable food.

The passage of the P1.227 trillion 2008 national budget has been delayed by the impasse between the Senate and the House of Representatives on the P13.5 billion pork insertions by the House.

Congress will tackle the budget when it resumes session in January 28.

Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya Jr. has warned lawmakers against insisting on their pork insertion, saying they will face a presidential veto.

Andaya has said that the government can go on with a reenacted budget but only up to May because the salary increase of about 1.4 million government workers would be implemented starting July 1. (JMR/Sunnex)
