Landslide in Davao damages 4 houses

DAVAO CITY -- Four houses were damaged due to a landslide that hit an old dumpsite in Matina Pangi, Davao City last Monday evening.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Regional Director Minda Morante identified the affected area as a sloping portion of the Orange Grove Drive in Matina Pangi, which was once part of the old city dumpsite when this was still along the Diversion Road.

The city dumpsite is now at New Carmen, accessible through a road passing Barangay Langub in Ma-a.

"At about 7:45 p.m. Monday, the soil gave way, damaging four houses," Morante said.

The OCD in Southern Mindanao is still assessing the total damage caused by the landslide.

One of the houses, reportedly owned by Oscar Sillona, was buried under the slick of garbage and mud.

The families of Leonardo Compe and Jonnie Salinas meanwhile refused to return to their houses as these were in precarious conditions, which they fear might give way anytime.

The house that had least damage was the one owned by Jessie Ramos. Only his kitchen had a crack.

The heavy rainfall every evening that has been experienced in Davao Region for a week now has saturated the soil, which was further softened by the heavy rain Monday night.

Members of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) surveyed the area Tuesday while the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) immediately provided assistance to the affected families.

Though no weather disturbance has been reported to be affecting the region, the weather forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric and Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) for this week showed that the region will experience mostly cloudy skies and rainy weather.

Major thoroughfares of Davao City were also heavily flooded causing heavy traffic jams. People were also stranded in the downtown area of the city.

The OCD has placed Southern Mindanao on heightened alert as rains continue. (With RCO/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
