RP shares lead at Women's World Cup of Golf after triple-bogey for South Korea (2:34 p.m.)
SUN CITY, South Africa -- Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin had the day's best round Saturday to give the Philippines a share of the lead with South Korea at the Women's World Cup of Golf.
Rosales and Delasin shot a 4-under 68 and the two teams were tied at 11-under 133 after the foursomes at the par-72 Gary Player Country Club.
The Korean pair of Ji-Yai Shin and Eun-Hee Ji were comfortably clear of the field at 14-under until a triple-bogey seven at the 17th.
"We'll just have to leave today's score behind us," said Shin after their tee shot was caught in very thick rough in the hazard. Shin's second shot only advanced the ball a few inches, and Ji opted to take a penalty drop and left the ball on the fringe of the green for four.
Three putts from the edge spoiled what had, until then, been a round with just a single bogey.
Only third-place Taiwan, with a 3-under 69, and Wales (71) beat par on the 6,466 yard (5,913 meter) course.
It took the Philippine pair eight holes for their first birdie, and they then dropped a shot on the 13th.
"But all along we played really well," Delasin said. "We were only in the rough twice, and that helped us shoot a good score."
Rosales and Delasin ended with three straight birdies.
Taiwan, a country with only 50 woman professionals, had four birdies between Amy Hung and Yun-Jye Wei.
"We played steady today, and just tried to hit the middle of the fairways," Hung said.
It was a tough day for the United States' Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst, slumping to a 4-over 76 and a share of 10th place at 3-under 141 with Brazil and Scotland.
"We didn't play very well," Inkster said. "I didn't drive the ball very well. We just never really got it into a rhythm and this
is the type of format where you need to get into a rhythm."
Canada's Lorie Kane and Alena Sharp got a 1-over 73 and was fourth at 7-under 137.
France, in second place after the opening round, was tied for fifth with Wales and Japan. Gwladys Nocera and Virginie
Lagoutte-Clement shot 76 after struggling to find any consistency.
Sweden's Maria Hjorth and Sophie Gustafson scored a 5-over 77 to slide down to a share of 13th with China on 2-under 142.
Host South Africa battled to even-par for ninth at 4-under 140, a single stroke behind defending champions Paraguay.
The final round Sunday will be a second round of best-ball play. (AP) |
