Police said another passenger, Manogod Gimba, expired at around 10:45 a.m. while being treated at the Kabacan Polymedic Hospital in neighboring Kabacan town.

The victims were on their way to Polloc port in Parang, Shariff Kabunsuan to welcome a relative returning from a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia when the accident happened.

Police Chief Inspector Reynante Gabico said the jeepney was carrying 20 people when it overtook another vehicle and smashed into the truck at a sharp curve along a highway in Carmen township in Cotabato province.

The jeepney was a total wreck.

The injured passengers were brought to the Amas provincial hospital where they are now being treated.

The driver of the truck, which was carrying 200 bags of cement, and his helper fled the crash scene but later surrendered to police, Gabico said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex/With AP)
